81. Drum dial clock with 10” dial.
ref. 1580

Obviously - not a skeleton clock - but we do make other types.

This clock started as a redundant movement with a battered 12” dial and no hands.

It was fully refurbished, fitted with a new 10” dial and hands and fitted into this fine bur walnut case. The case is of coopered construction and was made by our case-maker.

The movement is a standard English fusee with bronze wire to the barrel.

At times we are apt to make clocks other than skeletons - Usually on a whim by either the casemaker or Peter.

This clock, based on a known example dated 1700, is collaboration between our case maker and clockmaker.

The timber used is from old furniture, over 100 years old, and is finished with a scumbled/simulated walnut effect. The case is wall mounted on its own bracket. In line with tradition the hood is ‘slide up’ with the proper mechanism, including spoon & latch for the main door, being utilised. As a special touch the base door opens to facilitate regulation of the ‘royal’ pendulum. The movement is fusee with fine dead beat escapement. The pallets being extra narrow to give minimum amplitude.

The case is 42” high without bracket.

The train count is as follows:

                        Fusee                           96

                        Centre                          80                    Pinion 8

                        3rd                                75                    Pinion 10

                        Scape                           30                    Pinion 9

This gives a pendulum of 31.5 inches.

Going Barrel Strike with Platform Escapement
ref. 1595

A Going Barrel Skeleton clock with rack striking.

This clock was designed to fit the dome as the base was just too magnificent to leave on the shelf. Without room for a pendulum a large, club toothed, platform escapement was fitted between the plates.
Inspiration was taken from a 19th century clock with St George slaying the Dragon mounted on an urn.

Lozenge wall clock with full strike.
ref. 1591

This clock was built from an old fusee movement found at a clock fair.

The movement is dated about 1840 and has 5-spoke, regulator style, wheelwork. The original clock must have been quite magnificent.

The case was inspired by a clock shown in Ron Rose's latest dial clock book and made by our case maker. The dial is 8-inch and the movement is such a snug fit - the bell and pallets have to be fitted  after the movement is fitted into the case. Circular, fish scale, sound frets are fitted to both sides. Pendulum adjustment is through a door at the back.

Month going clock with day & moon phase.
ref. 1592

Clock number 0501

A month going clock with day of the month and phases of the moon.

This clock was designed in Gosport and, due to closing down for shipping the workshop to Malta, was not finished until recently. A special left hand fusee was made and a large fusee chain of suitable strength found. The month intermediate wheel is held by a single cock.   The pendulum has a kingwood rod with brass fittings. The large spring barrel is partly sunk into the Victorian base and housed in a fretted brass plinth. The dome is also Victorian and is associated with the base. The moon and dial, with it's night curtain, was executed by our usual artist.

Pin Wheel Passing Strike with Coup Perdu.
ref. 1593

The magnificent dome was purchased at the request of an American Customer. Unfortunately he didn't proceed with the transaction and it seemed a pity to leave it wanting a home. I decided to fill it with something a little unusual and came up with this. The design is a traditional frame but the escapement is Pin Wheel with Coup Perdu. To gain height, as the dome is 2 feet tall, a passing strike is added.

Wheel train is:-

Fusee 120 teeth

Centre pinion of 9 & wheel of 80

3rd pinion of 10 & wheel of 75

Scape pinion of 10 & 60 pins

Pendulum weight 1.75 kilo
